
렘브란트의 영감 넘치는 그림과 헨리 나우웬의 깊은 통찰력이 어우러져 빚어낸 또 하나의 작품
“헨리 나우웬 영성 모던 클래식” 시리즈는 우리에게 탁월한 영적 유산을 남기고 떠난 헨리 나우웬(1932-1996)의 대표적인 저서 컬렉션이다. 여기에는 지금까지 출간되지 않았던 유작도 일부 포함되는데, 대표적인 것이 이 책의 후속편이라 할 수 있는 Home Tonight(포이에마 근간)이다.
『탕자의 귀향』은 나우웬의 영적 삶의 궤적을 잘 보여주는 책이자 그의 대표작이다. 신약성경 누가복음 15장에 나오는 ‘탕자의 비유’를 고스란히 화폭에 옮긴 렘브란트의 그림에서 영감을 얻은 헨리 나우웬은 작은아들의 방탕한 삶과 귀환, 큰아들의 깊은 상실감과 분노, 아버지의 용서와 환대로 이어지는 일련의 움직임을 깊이 파고든다. 성경적, 역사적, 심리적 맥락에서 작품을 분석한 그의 글은 모든 사람들이 집으로 돌아가는 영적인 귀향길에 있음을 보여주는 한편 아들의 자리에서 아버지의 위치로 나아갈 것을 도전한다. 결국 그리스도인의 삶은 남루한 옷차림으로 무릎을 꿇고 있는 작은아들에게서 구부정하게 서 있는 아버지에게로, ‘축복을 받는 자리’에서 ‘은총을 베푸는 자리’로 나아가는 과정임을 설득력 있게 보여준다. 집을 떠나 여전히 방황하고 있는 이들에게, 그리고 과감하게 귀향을 결심했지만 익숙한 길과 안전한 경로를 찾지 못해 어려워하는 ‘아직 길 위에 있는’ 크리스천들에게 이 책은 넘치는 영감과 안전한 지침을 선사한다.
이 책은 국내에 동일한 제목으로 출간된 바 있지만 번역의 오류를 잡고 편집을 새롭게 하여 다시 출간한 것이다.
우연한 만남, 운명적 동행

그림을 통해 배우는 영성

아들의 신분 회복에서 아버지의 직분으로 가는 여정
이 책은 그림에 등장하는 세 사람을 중심으로 구성되었다. 이것은 헨리 나우웬이 경험한 영적 여정의 단계들이기도 했다. 아버지의 품을 그리워하며 집으로 돌아가고 있는 둘째아들에서 책임감을 가지고 착실하게 집을 지키고 있었던 첫째아들로, 그래서 질투와 분노, 완고한 태도, 무엇보다 교묘한 독선에 사로잡혔던 자기 자신을 발견한다. 그러나 끝내 그림에 등장하는 아버지, 슬픔과 용서, 너그러운 마음으로 상징되는 인정 넘치는 ‘아버지’가 되어야 한다는 소명을 받아들이는 자리에까지 이른다.
대부분 아버지의 집으로 돌아가는 것이 궁극적인 부르심이라고 생각하지만, 헨리 나우웬은 이보다 ‘더 큰 부르심’을 듣게 한다. 용서하고, 화해하며, 치유하고, 잔칫상을 내미는 두 손이 바로 우리의 손이어야 한다는 소명이다. 돌아온 자식들을 환영하며 잔치를 여는 아버지는 죄에 대하여 깊이 슬퍼할 수 있을 때, 진정으로 용서할 수 있을 때, 너그러운 마음을 품게 될 때 가능한 것임을 설득력 있게 들려준다. 나우웬은 여기까지 도달하지 못할 때 우리의 영적 여정은 종착점에 도착하지 못한 것이며 진정한 안식처 또한 찾지 못한 것이라고 못 박는다.
